ASSHOLE.
Its only fitting to start this blog with the game designed and played by assholes. You may not actually be an asshole when you start this game, but before the game is over, win or lose, you will become one.
HISTORY
Asshole is a drinking game popularized in Newark New Jersey in the late 1970's when it was played by street gangs to settle turf wars. The game quickly caught on with frat boys attempting to copy street culture in order to impress each other by appearing tougher. Frat boys changed some of the rules to making more fitting for a university setting. The South Side Hate Squad was notorious for playing the game until the oppossing gang's members passed out, at which point they would slice off their ear lobes. While this is a terribly violent act, the humiliation of losing an earlobe was enough to prevent widespread violence.
Frats on the other hand used the game to get girls drunk so that the brothers could take advantage of them. Which is worse? Does it matter? Cutting off an earlobe and taking advantage of drunk women are both asshole moves in my book.
THE GAME
The goal of the game is to be the first player out of cards. If you are the first to go out you sit atop the asshole hierarchey. You get a title like King or President or Chief Justice. Whatever the case may be you are now King, President or Chief Justice of a bunch of assholes. You also get to make a rule. This could be the only saving grace of the game. You can create great rules like outlawing the pronunciation of a hard 't'. Anyone who makes an infraction of the rule must drink.
The person to go out last becomes the asshole. The asshole has to shuffle and deal the cards. You can come up with positions for the rest of the assholes that are playing, but it really doesn't matter.
GAME PLAY
The rules can be found either here or here. The second link contains more house rules. The house rules reflect more of the street culture that asshole arose from. Each street gang would have their own variant of the rules and no standard was ever laid down. While consistently performing well in a game of asshole could result in a gain of respect and trust for new gang members, humiliating a gang leader could result in a beat down for low ranking members. In some of the more violent gangs, lower memebrs would intentionally play poorly in order to let higher ranking memebrs of the gang win.
